The city now known as Sultanabad, formerly Arak, is located in modern-day Iran and boasts a rich history in carpet weaving. Renamed Sultanabad in 1808, the region quickly gained renown for producing some of the most exquisite tribal rugs in the world. These rugs became highly coveted across Europe during the Victorian Era.
A pivotal moment arrived in 1878 when Ziegler & Co., a Swiss firm headquartered in Manchester, England, recognized an extraordinary opportunity to revive the carpet weaving industry in Iran. The company began commissioning local Sultanabad weavers to craft rugs tailored to European preferences.
Distinct from traditional tribal rugs, these commissioned Sultanabad rugs featured subtler color palettes, replacing the vivid blues and reds with ivories and softer hues that resonated with the Victorian aesthetic of the time. This collaboration not only revitalized the local weaving industry but also introduced a new elegance to the exquisite craft of Sultanabad rug making.
This particular example is a new carpet with inspirations taken from the 19th century Ziegler Sultanabad rugs. This piece showcases a soft color palette and muted tones as if they have softened over time.
A magnificent example of Ziegler Sultanabad design, this rug would make an excellent addition to any collection. It is both pleasing to the eye and soft underfoot, allowing you to enjoy the classic design of a Persian rug through subtle colors perfect for minimalist or contemporary interiors. The graceful design of this rug will add a touch of sophistication to your architecture. Its versatility makes it an ideal choice for fostering a formal yet welcoming ambiance in any space.
This beautiful Sultanabad inspired rug has been hand knotted by skilled weavers in Pakistan, using premium quality hand-spun wool with vegetable dyes.

This piece is one of a kind — but the artisans who wove it can create a new rug in its spirit, hand-knotted to your exact dimensions.
Every hand-knotted rug begins with a single knot.
Skilled artisans tie each knot entirely by hand, one at a time, using techniques that
have been passed down through generations. Depending on the size and intricacy of
the design, a room-sized rug may contain millions of individually tied knots.
For a single weaver, completing one masterpiece can take one to two years—or even
longer—making every rug a remarkable work of art, craftsmanship, and patience.
