Yastik – Tribal Anatolian Carpet

Rooted in one of the most intimate traditions of Anatolian weaving, the Yastik—meaning "pillow" in Turkish—originated as a functional textile used throughout rural Turkey for cushions, seating, and everyday comfort. These compact rugs were woven by nomadic and village women who transformed utilitarian household objects into expressive forms of tribal art. Their small scale, bold geometry, and symbolic motifs reflect generations of cultural inheritance and personal craftsmanship.

Our Tribal Yastik Classic is a modern hand-knotted interpretation woven in northern Afghanistan by master artisans who continue the weaving sensibilities of Anatolian village traditions. Using high-mountain wool sourced from sheep raised at elevations above 1,000 meters, the pile is exceptionally durable, naturally lustrous, and resilient under everyday use. This type of wool—renowned for its long fibers and rich natural lanolin—has long been favored for fine handmade carpets due to its ability to accept dyes deeply and age with graceful patina.

The design preserves the essence of historic Yastik patterns: stepped medallions, protective symbols, stylized botanical forms, and geometric pathways arranged within a compact and balanced composition. While antique Yastiks served as pillow covers, prayer pieces, and versatile household textiles, this contemporary version adapts the classic form into a refined decorative format suited to modern interiors, without losing the intimacy and charm of its original purpose.
